C2C AT PUMA CITY

May 4, 2009

On Monday, May 4th, 2009, Containers to Clinics (C2C) Executive Director Elizabeth Sheehan was featured on a panel, sponsored by the Boston Society of Architects, on innovative and alternative uses for shipping containers. The event was housed in the PUMA City exhibition at Fan Pier, Boston, a traveling exhibition in conjunction with the VOLVO Ocean Race. The PUMA City exhibition was constructed with over 30 industrial shipping containers. The panel, entitled "The New Wave of Crate Architecture," featured four architects and Ms. Sheehan, who emphasized the opportunities to use shipping containers for alternative uses in the developing world to achieve humanitarian goals. The panel was moderated by Cynthia Graber, a writer on sustainability and a reporter for WBUR.

C2C has partnered with the global healthcare architecture firm Anshen + Allen to design the prototype container clinic. C2C/Anshen architects Michael Stack, Ryan Campbell and Mali Ouzts attended the panel. Learnings from the construction of the PUMA City exhibition are being incorporated in the C2C prototype clinic which will feature ventilated, sterile spaces for patient consultation, a small laboratory and a low-cost pharmacy.
